Brother Allen Barnard submitted the following on Don Pieper, Alpha Epsilon ‘53, who entered the Chapter Eternal recently’
He was a graduate from Omaha North in 1949. Attended UNL where he was president of the senior class of 1953, was a member of Sigma Delta Chi (a professional journalism fraternity), Sigma Chi, chosen for the Innocents' Society (a senior men's honorary group to serve the University by stimulating student spirit and loyalty, and promote Cornhusker traditions. Only thirteen men are chosen each year. A most prestigious honor.)
Don was also associate editor (1st semester) and editor (2nd semester) of the Daily Nebraskan. The student-run newspaper reported campus, state, and national news and expressed student opinions.
He began his journalism career in college and spent summers writing for the Lincoln Star. After graduation, he reported for the Norfolk Daily News. He later worked for United Press International as a reporter and bureau manager in Omaha and as a regional executive in Indiana.
He moved to California in 1984 and where he was hired to write a column for the San Luis Obispo paper. Later he edited the Avila Pilot, wrote a column for the Five Cities Times Press Recorder and was a contributing editor for the Lincoln Forum Bulletin.
Don and I were pledges at Alpha Epsilon chapter of Sigma Chi and helped each other through the rigors of being a pledge. (this was in the good ole days) and the excitement of the induction ceremony as we became "actives."
